AR-15 Offset Buffer Retainer
Those of you that have had the ‘problem’ know that damaged buffer faces are caused by an out-of-spec buffer retainer pin location or even a bolt carrier. And it doesn’t take much! A ‘beat up’ buffer face is mostly cosmetic, but the more serious issue is if the constant pounding on the pin will eventually shear it off its base and end up somewhere around the trigger control group. Maybe even cause a jamb? I suppose it could.
The first thing you should do is take it up with the firearms manufacturer to have them correct their problem. It IS their problem. So here’s what the buffer retainer does. Nothing but hold the buffer and spring slightly compressed in place so it doesn’t ‘spring out’ during the take-down process. That’s it! It’s not supposed to come in contact with the buffer during the firing and cycling process. It’s really there for convenience, to simplify one’s life so to speak. You can actually remove the retainer and retainer spring and the AR will function just fine. Of course, when you forget you’ve removed the pin is when the buffer will fly out on you during your next cleaning.
The easy fix is an offset pin. It would allow the buffer to move further forward and contact the bolt carrier properly and get pushed back off the pin upon reassembly. And it works! Note the ‘shelf’ which is added to keep the retainer from rotating in place. The buffer tube rests on the lowered shelf shown and the retainer can no longer rotate.
This pic shows the effect of a properly functioning retainer. The bolt carrier contacts the buffer and pushes it back when fully assembled. That keeps the buffer from slamming into the pin during cycling.

I use Aero enhanced buffer tubes that have a slot for the pin to go thru. Will this pin be long enough to go thru the tube wall and still stop the buffer?

Caesar LopezApr 7, 2023, 23:51Worked like a charm. Ive built a few AR-15s and I decided to build my first AR-9. I used a standard AR-15 lower and when I first manually cycled the bolt a few times, I took the upper off and my buffer flew out. The head of the Mil-spec buffer retainer had sheared off. Did some research and found out 9mm bcg are slightly shorter then a standard AR-15 bcg. The bcg wouldn’t push the buffer off the retainer when assembled. This retainer worked great, it allowed the buffer to come forward just enough to contact the bcg when assembled..

AR BuilderMar 13, 2021, 11:04On my first build a 300 BLK pistol went great everything worked good. Then I installed a LAW folder and after that the buffer would hit the buffer pin, reinstalled and made sure it was on as far as it would let me, still hitting. Ordered one of these offset buffer pins and the problem was solved, it allows the buffer to come forward just enough that when the folder is locked into place the BCG extension pushes the buffer back just enough to keep it from causing any damage to the pin and the buffer.

This is a widespread issue in most home-built AR's and most people are clueless about it. You can just run the rifle without the buffer retainer pin but then taking down the rifle every time is a real pain in the ass. These offset pins are worth every penny.
